Best grinder in its price range : Capresso 565 Infinity Conical Burr Grinder, Stainless Steel
A typical consumer cannot distinguish the quality of grinders by looking at the outside casing or looking at the manufacturer's name. The truth is, the quality of the grinder is almost entirely determined by the quality of its interior burr set. [Other factors are the motor and the gear set.] The Capresso Infinity happens to be built using the best burr set of any grinder under $100: they are even capable of producing a fine espresso grind, though not as well as grinders starting in the $200 range, like the Gaggia MDF. The only other grinder under $150 which is typically compared to the Infinity in coffee magazines is the Solis Maestro, but the latter is certainly no better, and has a reputation for unreliability. Similarly, the chrome model of the Infinity is only cosmetically different -- and so not nearly the same value.
I'm sorry one of the customers got a defective machine, but this is a great grinder, and the black model (signicantly cheaper than the chrome model) is probably the best value in coffee grinders out there. It will handle everything from fine grinding to coarse with the simple turn of the dial, and you can expect the burrs to stay sharp significantly longer than your other models in this category.
At the same time, it will not do long term for an espresso hobbyist. I own two Infinity's, and I have used each with two Gaggias, a Delonghi, and an ECM Giotto espresso machine. They worked adequately for espresso for a little less than a year, but then, even on finest setting, were woefully insufficient. That's why people spend $200-$400 on espresso grinders: you simply need burrs that will not dull, and mechanical tolerances that are so tight that no loosening happens. So I still recommend a Gaggia MDF for anyone actually making espresso: it will last many years, not less than one, and it will give you over a dozen espresso settings, not two.

As good as it gets (in grind&brew) : Capresso 464.05 CoffeeTeam GS 10-Cup Digital Coffeemaker with Conical Burr Grinder
This is my first recapitulate but I'm taking the time to express how impressed I am with this product and the company. I bought the coffee maker/burr grinder combo because of my annoyance with grist beans that get all over the place. This coffee maker grinder/combo works wonderfully. Put the beans in, set the grind setting, and there you go. The consistency of the grind is awesome! I have it set to grind the finest with a mix of esspresso and columbian beans with no clogging problems at all for over a month now. I was wary because I had heard gripes about how loud the grinder is but I well found it to be quieter than my former stand alone Cappresso grinder which cost $60 alone. I get up at 0400 and it doesn't wake up the rest of the house. The best part was the buyer service. After a consolidate of days, I noticed that the clock appeared to be off. I measured it over some days and it ended up that the digital clock ran fast which messed up the programmed time I wanted coffee in the morning. I was worried that it would be a pain to return since I bought it on the internet and return or heal would be a hassel. When I called the 800 amount for Capresso in the manual and told them my story they sent me out a transfer unit (without even requiring proof or info that I purchased the unit from a third party). The new unit arrived with return Ups label (I didn't need to pay for shipping for the new unit or return) and it works great!
I advise this buy whole heartedly. If your seeing at this machine because you want great fresh coffee with No mess and No worries, this is the machine and the business for you!

Still happy after three months : Breville BCG450XL Conical Burr Grinder
my preliminary order from amazon was Doa. The power button will not depress. Obviously it needs power to grind...
i contacted breville directly as they are nearby in torrance, ca. Since amazon was out of stock on a exchange unit, i notion breville may have been able to help me problem shoot the unit and save me the hassle of the return process. Low and discern breville customer assistance is exceptional! they instantly emailed me a prepaid fed-ex return label and Rma and i had a new unit in 3 days! no questions asked! they even sprung for fed-ex saturday delivery! so bear that in mind if you get a defective unit.
so the grinder- truly excellent. Especially for pump espresso...
well built, sturdy and nice looking in stainless steel. Solid feel not a cheap plasticy feeling here.
no static. Make sure you wash the grinds holder before first use.
not too loud. beyond doubt alot quieter than our old blade grinder.
the grind. I got this because we recently purchased a "Real" espresso machine- a gaggia carezza espresso machine and i regularly do lattes on the weekend. I am a huge fan of fresh beans and love to grind before brewing (the way it should be done). However the gaggia is a tiny finicky on the grind. Our blade abrasive could not produce an even grind and i don't like buying preground. So i invested in this grinder. Excellent grind! nice crema. I found with the carezza the best setting with the breville is Just past the espresso setting 2 or 3 clicks toward the turkish. This provides a Excellent even grind for the gaggia machine. Haven't tried it out for our cuisinart drip maker yet but, i'm sure if it can satisfy the gaggia it'll rock the cuisinart.
the taste- fantastic. Make sure you use a capability bean. For espresso i prefer the vesuvio blend and the dancing goats blend from batdorf and bronson. These also (especally the dancng goats blend) double very nicely for a drip cup of coffee too. You can order from them online and they do not roast your beans until the day your order ships. I hypothesize soon i will be getting my own roaster and start home roasting...
the cons- beyond doubt only 1 (or 2). The timer. I haven't figured it out yet. It seems like it is too short of a grind time even set to max (30 seconds). So if you want to grind for say 8 cups you have to run it at 30 seconds twice. Which leads to the user manual, which may be outdated becauses it states the timer is set to read in cups. Which it is not, it is in seconds. Of procedure that's sort of trivial as you can bypass the timer by just holding in the grind button. But if you want to set and forget it it may be a tiny hassle. But more fiddling with it may lead to a clearer understanding of the timer- though it is not rocket science.
overall i modernize my report to a 4 star after receiving the preliminary defective unit. The fact that breville customer assistance is so great lends peace of mind to a purchase. I only deduct one star for the timer. Please Check Update Here!!
